Have you ever wanted to use Skype to call a cell phone, but didn’t want to pay for it? If you have a Gmail account in the US, you can do it now.

Google launched its latest service, called, erm… “Call phones from Gmail” yesterday. You’ll see it in your account soon if you haven’t signed in on your desktop.

I assume they’ll be adding this with video to Android based phones soon. Will there be any need for cell phone carriers once Google gives free wifi to everyone?

Oh, and if you got a call from (760) 705-8888 recently, it’s probably someone you know testing out the new service. So answer the phone next time.
